Dalton Smith returns to make a first defense of his WBC super lightweight title against former titleholder Alberto Puello today from Sheffield, England, live on DAZN.
Smith won the title in January by stopping Subriel Matias, who had won a controversial majority decision over Puello in July 2025. This bout was originally set for the summer, but was postponed due to injury, and now it’s on.

Dalton Smith def. Alberto Puello by Split Decision
- Smith retains the WBC Super Lightweight Title
- SCORES: 116-112 Puello, overruled by two scores of 115-113 for Smith
Instant Reaction: Think those are all fair scores! Smith had an argument, so did Puello, both guys fought about equally, it was a very close fight. Both had their moments, their strong points, both could have done some things better, in theory. It wasn’t the most exciting fight, but there was some good, mature boxing on display. Puello has made it a hard night for everyone he’s ever faced and will do it again. He’s not easy to fight. But Smith edges past him, and can look forward to a bigger, more potentially exciting fight next.
- Round 12: Another round where I think you can form an argument for either guy. Puello landing some decent lefts, and turning up the heat late in the round to leave the last good impression for the judges. Smith answers that by dancing, he thinks he’s got it won. I’m not sure he couldn’t do with another punch or three landing in those final 30 seconds. Smith nicks this round for me, but I think Puello won this fight. Smith 10-9, Puello 115-113
- Round 11: Puello coming out a bit more aggressive this round. Smith feeds off that a bit and starts punching forward and coming in with a bit more pep. Both landing shots, Puello is always just about ready to throw back when Smith starts throwing more. Smith is doing some good work in this round but it might be another one for Puello. I don’t expect that two judges agree with me right now. And on a second look, I probably wouldn’t have it all the same a second time. Puello 10-9, 106-103
- Round 10: Tony Bellew has the same score as me, in reverse for Smith. Everyone I’m seeing is 5-4 one way or the other, really. Another razor close round. They said at the top this would be about fine margins and it’s hard to find any finer margins than this. It’s often a choice between Best Punch of Round, just about every round is close. Puello 10-9, 96-94
- Round 9: Good start this round for Smith, first half of it I thought was definitely his. Puello gave himself an argument late, though. Puello 10-9, 86-85
- Round 8: I have an eye on the comments too and MostDangerous just led this round with a true statement: “Dalton can’t outbox him, gotta start playing checkers, not chess.” And indeed, Smith might want to try turning up the volume. And yet Puello does not make that easy or surely opponents would do it more than they do. I liked some of the work Puello did in close this round, he’s rarely forced to be close but he got some little shots in when he found himself there, and he’s really not allowed Smith any chance to do body work. Puello 10-9, 76-76
- Round 7: OK, we’re definitely getting into a compelling chess match of a fight at this point. This one I liked Smith just a bit more. He’s having more trouble countering than earlier. This has been typical Puello, though. Rounds are not dominant either way, at least not many at all. It’s always going to be close. He makes it tough on an opponent and a judge. Smith 10-9, 67-66
- Round 6: Puello getting more active, maybe growing in confidence himself. I thought Smith did land some pretty good punches this round, arguably the better shots. Close but I’m edging to the challenger. Puello 10-9, 57-57
- Round 5: Puello is landing shots still, though, and he probably won this round. Or, well, we’ll score it for him; on the road as the B-side, “probably won this round” means something different. If Puello can keep jabbing, he is going to stay close in this fight. Puello 10-9, Smith 48-47
- Round 4: Another good right hand early in the round, Smith has shaken Puello a little again. And it’s another good round for him. He’s got a nice, patient control of this so far. Mature, strong performance. Smith 10-9, 39-37
- Round 3: About 70 seconds into the round, Smith lands a shot that pushes Puello back a little bit. Puello’s OK, though. Not a thriller but an interesting chess match so far. Smith takes another round on the right hands for me, and clear, but Puello is not giving it away. Smith has to earn these rounds by bits and pieces. Smith 10-9, 29-28
- Round 2: Smith really trying to time his right hand this round. Not his only weapon but a good one. Certainly more active for Smith, not exactly a tornado of offense from either, and that shouldn’t have been expected. Puello is best as a spoiler, and he’s doing OK with that early, but Smith took this round and started to look more confident in attack. Smith 10-9, 19-19
- Round 1: Very lively, obviously pro-Smith crowd to start us off. A type of first round that Puello will like, the sort of pace he wants. But we’ll see if Smith is just feeling it out, too, and ramps up the aggression in the coming rounds. There wasn’t a lot in this one, and Puello got the sharper shots in, even if there weren’t many and he wasn’t exactly stinging Smith down to his shoes. Puello 10-9
Giorgio Visioli def. Maxi Hughes by Majority Decision
- Scores: 95-95 even, overruled by 96-94 and 96-94 for Visioli
- Visioli improves to 12-0 (6 KO) with a really solid win that he had to grind out. Hughes (29-10-2, 6 KO) looked a lot better in his return to 135 than he did trying to fight Pierce O’Leary at 140 back in March, but it’s three straight losses for the 36-year-old all the same, and he appears stuck at prospect checker now, albeit a high-level prospect checker, one who can actually do some checking. Not a great fight to watch.
Leo Atang def. Jonathan Vergara by TKO in Round 1
- Exactly as expected here for the 19-year-old Atang (9-0, 8 KO). Atang is expected to return for fight No. 10 on December 12 in Monte Carlo.
Shannon Ryan def. Emma Dolan by TKO in Round 1
- Ryan retains Commonwealth super flyweight title and wins British super flyweight title
- I don’t want to overly speculate here, but Dolan (9-2, 1 KO) looked bad. Nervous, not really prepared to fight, straight up in the ring, and then to get stopped in 46 seconds by Ryan (12-1, 3 KO), six months after being crushed in three by Irma Garcia — Dolan might want to take a break and reconsider boxing for the time being. These two fought in 2024 and Dolan won a 10-round decision, a very close and competitive fight. But this is not the same Emma Dolan as then.
