Amazon appears to have made a massive streaming mistake by releasing Jason Statham’s new movie Mutiny on Prime Video before it even arrives in theaters.
The upcoming action thriller is officially scheduled to hit theaters on Friday, August 21, but the entire movie was briefly available to stream through Amazon Prime Video in the United States on Wednesday.
Amazon has since removed access to the film, but unfortunately for the studio, the damage may already be done.
Mutiny Released on Prime Video
According to The Verge, Mutiny was available to watch in its entirety on Prime Video for at least an hour.
This wasn’t simply an incorrect listing or trailer accidentally published ahead of schedule.
A Verge staff member actually watched the complete 1-hour-and-35-minute movie through Amazon’s streaming service before it was removed.
The Prime Video page also appeared to be fully prepared for an eventual streaming release, complete with a thumbnail, cast information, description, and the movie itself.
What’s especially strange is that Amazon isn’t distributing Mutiny.
The movie is a MadRiver Pictures and Punch Palace production with Lionsgate handling distribution in the United States. The official Mutiny website still promotes the movie as “Only in theaters August 21.”
While pulling the movie from Prime Video may have stopped additional viewers from watching it through Amazon, putting a full-quality copy online for an hour creates another problem.
Reports indicate that copies of Mutiny have already started circulating through piracy websites and P2P networks.
Twisted Voxel reports that copies appeared online following the accidental release, while users on Reddit also claim that 1080p copies quickly surfaced after the Prime Video stream became available.
This is much different from the low-quality “cam” recordings that typically appear following a theatrical premiere.
If the circulating copies were captured directly from Amazon’s stream, a high-quality version of the movie could now be available before paying customers even have the opportunity to see it in theaters.
That could create quite the headache for Lionsgate just two days before opening weekend.
Still Scheduled for Release
Despite Amazon apparently giving some viewers an extremely early screening, Mutiny is still scheduled for its official theatrical release on August 21, 2026.
This is a pretty incredible mistake for a movie that hasn’t even reached theaters yet.
Studios spend enormous amounts of time and money fighting piracy, yet in this case it appears that a major streaming platform may have provided the source material itself.
Once a clean digital copy makes its way onto the Internet, removing the original Prime Video stream won’t put the genie back in the bottle.
It will also be interesting to see whether Amazon or Lionsgate explains how the movie became publicly accessible in the first place. We will update this article if additional information becomes available.
