Deric “Scooter” Davis def. Carlos Ramos by Unanimous Decision

Official Scores: 77-75, 78-74, and 78-74 for Davis
BLH Unofficial Score: 77-75 for Ramos

The commentary crew over-hyped Davis and his incoming record and what incredible power he has. He’s a 23-year-old kid who’s never fought anyone decent and was taking a pretty big step up even against Ramos here. And then that part showed up and the power, frankly, never did. Davis (12-0, 10 KO) looked undercooked, befuddled by a southpaw, a little confused by a pro who wasn’t just there to fall over when he got hit with a power shot. In fact, Ramos (18-5-1, 10 KO) didn’t get hit by many power shots at all.

You can see the physical tools in Davis. I thought Ramos won this, and I think six rounds of eight to Davis is borderline absurd, but I’m not rooting against Davis, nor meaning to gloat against the work of Grisham, Mannix, and Mora on commentary. I just think it does young fighters a disservice to suddenly talk about someone as this blue chip star in the making out of nowhere, and that’s what they did with Davis, which makes the performance seem worse than it was. He struggled, but he also didn’t get so frustrated that he gave up on trying to make the difference. He’ll go back to the gym and hopefully get better. But this was tough for him. He got a questionable W, but now it’s up to him and his dedication to improve, and these were valuable rounds. I feel bad for Ramos, but I don’t intend to hold some fan’s grudge against Davis. Hopefully he works hard and gets sharper.
