We first heard about this live TV player from Patrons in the TROYPOINT Insider, which remains one of the best resources for cord-cutters.

Supported integrations include M3U playlists (by URL or a local file), Xtream Codes logins, Stalker portals. A full TV guide, profiles, offline saves, and catch-up viewing all arrive free.

OwnTV is available for installation on any Android-powered device that includes Fire TV and Android TV/Google TV boxes.

However, this app is not available in the popular app stores (Google Play & Amazon), so we will need to side-load the APK on our device. Below you will find installation tutorials, a feature breakdown, and our honest review.

OwnTV Categories & Details

OwnTV keeps the home screen simple and its main menu includes Home, Live TV, Movies, TV Shows, Downloads, TV Guide, and Settings.

The Live TV section is where you can access all of your channels sorted by categories.

You can also add channels to favorites as there is a dedicated ‘Favorites’ category.

Full screen mode works great on this live TV player. You can activate full screen by simply clicking a channel.

If your live TV service or playlist provides a working EPG, the TV Guide section works well.

The Movies and Series tabs are where you can access video-on-demand content if your live TV provider or playlist offers it.

OwnTV also offers a ton of settings you can customize for profiles, playlists, playback, EPG sources, appearance, parental controls, and more.

To better sum this up, the notable features within the OwnTV app include:

  • Xtream Codes, Stalker portal, M3U URL, and local M3U file support
  • Two playback engines: mpv for movies and shows, ExoPlayer for near-instant live channels
  • Full TV guide with now, next, later, plus catch-up reaching back seven days
  • Live rewind that scrubs backward on any channel your provider records
  • Multiple profiles with PIN locks, kids flags, and separate favorites or history
  • Mini-player that docks to a corner while you keep browsing
  • Audio-only mode that frees your screen but keeps sound playing
  • Subtitle support
  • Automatic in-app updates
  • Offline downloads

OwnTV Review

While OwnTV is a newer live TV player, we were very impressed and it seems promising for the long term. Here is what our testing revealed:

What We Like

  • Completely free with no ads and no email required
  • Open-source under MIT license, so the entire codebase is auditable on GitHub
  • No malicious files flagged in VirusTotal scan
  • Dual playback engine gives strong codec support (libmpv) plus fast live channel switching (ExoPlayer)
  • HDR passthrough for 4K movies and shows on supported hardware
  • Full EPG if your live TV provider supports it
  • Multiple profiles with PIN locks, kids flags, and separate favorites or watch history
  • Offline downloads for movies and episodes
  • Mini-player docks to a corner while browsing other content
  • Active developer maintaining a Telegram channel who takes user feedback

What We Don’t Like

  • Not available in Google Play or the Amazon Appstore, so sideloading is required
  • No cloud sync between multiple devices
  • No recording function yet, though the developer has hinted this may come later
  • No custom group creation for organizing favorites, per community requests
  • Newer app with only 14 GitHub stars, so long-term maintenance is unproven
  • Built with AI assistance per the developer, which some users may view as a caution flag

Is OwnTV APK Safe to Use?

The best way to determine the safety of 3rd party apps is by scanning them with a virus checker such as VirusTotal.

OwnTV VirusTotal Scan
OwnTV VirusTotal Scan

After scanning, VirusTotal did not flag any malicious files within the OwnTV APK. However, we should always protect ourselves with a VPN when streaming content from unverified IPTV players like this one.

Proceed with caution and understand the security risks if you decide to use this third-party app.

Final Thoughts from Troy

OwnTV is a strong pick for cord-cutters who want a completely free, open-source IPTV player without the paid tier that dominates most competitors. Sentiment from the TROYPOINT Insider has been extremely positive since the app hit our radar.

If you’re looking for a fully free IPTV app with no paywall and don’t mind the missing recording feature, OwnTV is worth trying.
